This module is a course that leads you to the world of Handicrafts production. It covers core competencies that a grade 7/8 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) student like you ought to possess.


Introduction

Did you know that by simply putting together old drinking glasses, you are already demonstrating an act of recycling, which is an activity that has something to do with handicrafts? Have you noticed the latest trends or brands in malls? What about the indigenous materials used in Paper Products stores? What about the lantern-making competitions in your school or in your community every December? Those are perfect examples of Handicrafts! Cool isn’t it?


Definition of terms:

 

●       Embroidery- the art of designing with needle and thread.

●       Fabric- any woven, knitted or felt cloth.

●       Thread- a very fine cord composed of strand or strands of spun silk, flax or cotton used in sewing.

●       Design - arrangement of line, form, color and texture with the purpose of achieving order and beauty.


What is the meaning of the word Handicrafts?

 

Handicrafts production is an activity that involves skillfully making something by using your hands and may serve as a hobby that can be turned into something profitable.

 

- According to Wikipedia, handicrafts production is any of a wide variety of types of work where useful and decorative objects are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. Handicraft making is seen as a way of developing the skills and creative interests of the students, generally and sometimes towards a particular craft or trade. Most crafts require creativity, resourcefulness, and the application of patience.


TYPES OF HANDICRAFTS

 

  1. Pottery – is the art of making objects from hard clay by exposing them to heat or fire. One of the most common product of pottery are the burnay jars of Ilocos which are used as a container/jar for their relatives who passed away.

2. Weaving – is the making of fabrics by interlacing threads. Tibunal communities like Tausug, Ifugaos and T’boli’s are known for their woven textiles.

3.      Wood Carving – the art of putting designs into wood pieces.

4. Lantern or Christmas Parol Making – one of the latest trends of handicrafts today.

5. Embroidery - the art of designing with needle and thread.

6. DIY (Do-it-Your Own Crafts) – one of the most trending handicrafts in our generation today. This craft is well known to the majority of millennials today.
